Podcast guest spots:
where to start?
Podcast guest spots:
where to start?
Earned Media
If you’re keen to start securing podcast guest spots, i.e. you as the interviewee, not the host, but you’re not sure where to start, these three tips will help you on your way.
1. Networks
If you’ve never been interviewed on a podcast before, the first place to start is podcast networks. Matchmaker, for example, is brilliant for pairing ‘new to the game’ interviewees with ‘new to the game’ interviewers. All you need to do is create a profile and start interacting with the podcasts you’d like to work with. The basic membership is free, so no need to commit any of your hard-earned cash.
2. Profile
When you have gained some experience with smaller podcasts, you may want to start exploring those with bigger audiences. To do this, you’ll need to first create a polished bio to send to perspective podcasts. Your bio should include:
A little bit about you and why you would make a great guest
Your credentials
Details of other podcasts you have guested on
Any other media you have secured – articles, written interviews, etc.
Career highlights, if relevant
Your social links and website if you have them
A photo of you
Your bio should look slick, get to the point (cut out the waffle) and be easy-to-read.
3. Research and Reach Out
Now you have your experience and bio, it’s time to approach the podcasts you’d love to work with. Many will have submission forms on their websites, or a general enquiries form where you can ask whether they’d be interested in considering you as a guest (include some top line information about yourself). Not all podcasts are suitable matches for all people – don’t take it personally if some hosts turn you down, for others you may be their perfect guest. It’s a long-term plan that is worth the hours you put in: the outcome can be spectacular, and it is often a great way to secure leads, fans and connect with people you admire. And remember, the more experience you have, the more likely you will be considered on other podcasts.
